I went out to the river to do some fishing on Sunday. The water was up quite a bit, but still pretty clear, and the current was rediculously strong. I really had to work hard to just stand in place in some spots. Unfortunetly, because of the current, I wasn't able to hit some of the really good spots. However, fishing wasn't too bad. I ended up catching 7 smallmouth, including a 14.5", 16", and a 17", as well as a rock bass. Most of the action came on some homemade hair jigs.

It was part of the Vermillion River, but the exact location will remain undisclosed. I think the smallie fishing is pretty good in a lot of the more "natural" rivers around here, including below the spillway. I didn't take my camera along because I didn't feel like getting it wet, as I fell in a few times. I need to get a waterproof disposable for these situations. Unfortunetly I can't go Friday - I need to head up to Lake Michigan for the summer so I can wack some more smallies up there!
Good luck Steve and be carefull! You should take someone else with you to be safe. Let me know how you do.

friday i'm going to another spillway after some fish that are bigger than smallies.........and have sharp teeth.....if ya know what i mean i also didnt mean to make you think i was trying to steal your spot. fishing spots are classified as far as i'm concerned. people that fish with me rarely see the depth finder or know what i'm even looking for. my head is the gps i dont need waypoints......yet

Gotta love smallies. Way too busy to hit the river...looks like ill have to wait till fall. What part of Lake Michigan do you fish in the summer, north or south end? I tend to fish the north end a lot but wouldn't mind driving to the south end for a day to meet and fish with guys from the club.

That wouldn't be too bad of a drive for me. Let me know if you ever want to fish the harbors with someone or try out some of the more northern harbors I fish.
