Caught the biggest smallmouth of my life today in Lake Michigan. It came in right at 20"! I got one that was just under 20" last year but didn't get a pic, so it felt good to catch this one. Really nice markings on it too. Fishing hasn't been great this year, but probably averaging 3 smallies a night. Largemouth are just starting to make beds and just beginning to bite. Along with this smallie, I got two others, 8 largemouth, and 3 rock bass. Most of the fish are coming on shaky heads and wacky rigs. Doug got out with me once a couple of weeks ago and claims to have caught his biggest smallie ever too - around 17".

Great fish and awesome markings. I managed to get out there twice this year and it seems much slower than the last couple, possibly due to the lower water levels this year.

I've noticed that it seems slower this year too, but haven't noticed the drop in water levels. I'm also catching much smaller fish on average this year in comparison to last. Where do you fish at on the lake?

Aren't Waukegan and northpoint both closed to fishing except for a couple small areas?

Northpoint is a lot more restricted than Waukegan. Havent had a problem fishing along the break walls at Waukegan, they just don't want anyone making cast towards the boats. At Northpoint theres a fishing pier and one other pier that harbor patrol doesnt care if you fish off.

Do you do pretty well off of the breakwalls at Waukegan? Saw a boat fishing out there this weekend - but they said they didn't catch anything. I think I saw 4 smallies swimming around out there though.

Id say the fishing is great is pretty good out there on average, with some really great days thrown in. Its usually right about this time that I start to do better on the outside of the breakwall than in the harbor.

Smallie fishing has been tough lately. However, I managed this brute along with another one tonight. My second biggest smallie measuring in at 19.5". Couple of smallmouth on beds still but they are basically done. Largemouth are all over the board: prespawn, spawn, and post-spawn. So many options....
