Well it's that time of year, time for all of us to strip the line off our reels and get them ready for next year. Instead of just throwing out our used mono, fluoro and braid, I want to start a collection of the line to recycle it instead.
Berkley runs a line recycling program through Cabela's where they collect old line and then recycle it to make fish habitats that they drop into lakes around the country.
As a fishing club, I think we have a big responsibility in conservation and making sure we keep our waters as clean as possible and protecting the fish that inhabit them. Used fishing line that is not disposed of properly can find its way into lakes and rivers where fish can become entangled with it and die. As anglers, we also know how frustrating it can be to get hung up on line left in the water.
So, at each General Meeting for the rest of the year I will bring a bin to collect everyone's used line and I will dispose of it at Cabela's. If you guys wanted to take it a step further, we could get other local clubs and high schools involved and collect used line from them. We could also run a collection at our tournaments as well. I think if we work hard enough, we might be able to count this as the community service we need for the College BASS tournaments but at the very least I would like to do this as a club.
