I always wondered how does Ouachita get pronounced Washita?

Ouachita comes from the Native American word "Washita" which means "good hunting grounds." Native American groups such as the Caddo and Osage resided in the area of Arkansas that is now Ouachita National Forest. They referred to this area as Washita which the French then spelled Ouachita and it continues to be spelled this way today!
