But other studies have found that fish don't have the same complex nervous system that we do. No other animal has such a sensitive nervous system as us and it's unrealistic to compare hooking a dog to a fish. Just because they have the neurotrasmitters such as endorphines doesn't mean they have the same brain processing to understand what is happening to them. In other words, there is no evidence of the psychological expereince of pain. Idk, most of you probably already know all this, but I figured I'd comment, as I am probably the person most sympathetic to animals in the group. But come on, some people take animal rights way too far, there's enough human suffering in the world to worry about before I'm going to concern myself with the pain felt by a fish.
Thanks for the website Chris, it was interesting to check it out, and a good way to procrasitinate my homework.

You know Bass Times published a commentary several months ago talking about PETA pushing a ant-fishing agenda. Apparently they (PETA) were publishing comic book type propaganda and distributing it to school children. From what I remember of this it was titled something on the lines of "Why my Daddy is a Murderer" and it depicted a lunatic looking father person with a knife in one hand and fish guts in the other - all in front of his children of course.
As an organized club you have the ability to organize and formulate a plan to fight against such propaganda and work with the community to spread the positive aspects of fishing to others. As a non-member and non-CU resident I can only make a suggestion - try organizing an event in the local area - maybe even try to contact BASS and Zebco (since they have been pushing the "take a kid fishing" campaign pretty hard) for some support, as well as some local media channels. It would be a good way to fight the ignorance and propaganda spread by groups such as PETA as well as to gain some recognition for your club and the sport. Locally you may want to contact the Boys and Girls Club, the Champaign Park District, Big Brothers/Sisters and try pairing up with the C-U Bass club.

The funny thing is that PETA should be thankful for anglers. They don't realize that our fisheries management is PAID FOR BY ANGLERS via licenses and taxes on fishing gear etc. Basically what I'm saying is that many of these fish that we are so-called "murdering" would be worse off without anglers or non-existent in the first place. Plus non-game fish (darters, shiners, the list goes on) are included in this management. There are bigger and more important things to be concerned about than fish getting hooked (starving kids in Africa comes to mind).

Big suprise for most of you, but I've recieved some Peta brochures before (both for adults and kids). And its INSANE how they brainwash kids in the books, and even have false information in them. On the little kids side I've gotten several books... and I think I actually have a fish one somewhere.... they basically tell the kids if they eat a piece of fish the mercury is going to kill you. It's pretty funny really.... but I think a community event would be great if everyone really puts some work into it.
