I've been thinkin' about getting the 4600 c3 for a while, but isn't a little small? What do you guys use it for? I wanted a reel that was the 5500 c3 size, but i'm not too crazy about the casting button off to the side. any suggestions?

Weigh all your options equally, everyone has their own preferences. You don't have to get a certain reel because someone else likes it. Of course you should try a Quantum Accurist, they are very smooth.

agreed. everyone in the club has opinions about their favorite reels. spend what you can afford on what you like. dont let my or anyone's bias influence you on brand.

rob even admits that his reels can't handle the type of deep crankin' i do........to add my bias to the page since everyone else has.........i burned up 2 sets of gears in a shimano in 4 months and the factory made me pay for them because they said i "abused" it. everyone in the club knows i lube my reels VERY frequently and gears should last more than 2 months in a 380 dollar reel. i've never once had a problem with garcia and i have used quantum's before. i have some ancient quantum 1310's that the gears in the one are just starting to rough up on me. it is 13 years old and was fished hard because at one time it was my only reel. myself and others have garcia reels from over 30 years ago and one member in the club has one from 1945. i can't think of any other brand that you can find reels that old that have been fished that are still smooth and in like new condition under the sideplates. get the garcia my friend. i own 28 garcia reels and i have never had one fail on me. ask vandy about how smooth his 5000's are. amazing that antiques are as smooth as some of today's high quality reels. simply amazing.

Different reels for different applications.
Round bait casters and low gear ratios are great for the kind of fishing Ryan does - deep cranking, swim baits, etc.
Low profiles are better (less fatigue) for flipping, pitching, etc. Low profiles with high gear ratios enable you to pick up slack quickly and/or throw spinnerbaits (not huge ones) and other smallish fast-moving baits all day with minimal resistance.
Just my .02 cents.

i use a 5600 c4 for swim baits, i like high speed reel for fishing soft plastics but round reels are virtually indestructible. i am partial to the round design because they have more space for bigger, more durable internal parts. they also tend to have fewer parts. since i fix all my stuff fewer parts are easier to disassemble and rebuild when cleaning, but also there is less to go wrong. round reels are considered less comfortable for those with small hands........unlike vandy....cough cough..........but once again i will stress personal experience and preference should be the ultimate decision maker.

another thing to think about that came to me while i was eating dinner is i have an older quantum (low profile) that had a 5.2:1 gear ratio. i have a garcia c3 which has a 5.3:1 gear ratio. the line pickup per one turn of the crank on the quantum is only 19 inches while the pickup on the c3 is 23.7 inches. although they seem to have the same gear ratio the actual line pickup is not nearly the same. this is due to the fact that round style reels usually have larger diameter spools than low profiles (this is not usually based on brand bias) in my experiences. sean is right tho if you do a lot of pitching and flipping a low profile reel will be more comfortable. low profiles with my "crankin" gear ratios are non-existant any more. if you use a lot of larger baits a c3 or reel with similar line pickup would be more ideal. if you burn small baits, a higher speed reel may be better suited. use caution with some high speed reels however because if you pull very large baits and the reel gets incredibly hard to crank, a lower gear ratio reel would be both easier on you and the equipment. i would rather turn a reel faster for a slower retrieve rate than struggle with a high speed reel. being an engineering student i can show you how it is easier to do this with torque equations. just some more things to think about when buying a reel. i would however reccommend the "standard" gear ratio for someone who can't afford to specialize all rods and reels for specific tactics. you can still burn baits the old fashioned way by turning the crank at high speeds and you can fish larger baits which create more drag also. the standard speed reels tend to be cheaper too. vandy a truck winch fits your hand just fine haha.
