I'm going to have to go with the Salt Fork River. Now, I haven't been down in several years because the U of I spilled a huge amount of ammonia into that river but, before the spill that was THE place to catch smallies. We're talking a 16" chunk every trip and fish upwards of 20". I took a friend who later went back by himself and poppped a 22". My biggest was around 20".
Did I mention we were using ultralights almost exclusively (2-4 lb. test)? I even brought my fly rod out once and caught a few on topwater.

Sean, what part of the river do you fish? Is it a good place to go with waders? Want to go with me on Sunday? -Dinty

I have had good numbers at Kaufmann, my personal best there is somewhere around 4lbs, Lake of the Woods has some big bass in there, my personal best there is around 8lbs back in the mid '90s though. my problem there is the fact they kill off their weeds so the paddle-boaters can ruin my fishing; Homer Lake hasn't produced much for me in the past few years, usually I had better luck there in the fall; you forgot about Mattis Lakes off of Devonshire, which I had a few good days last summer stuck one around 4lbs there as well; also forgot about Riverbend which should be open this summer - clear, windy strip pit south of Mahomet off of Rt 47, difficult to fish because a lack of shoreline to fish from, allot of locals talk about 8 - 10 pounders being caught there, so it has potential. Apparently they installed a boat ramp for canoes and boats with electric motors only. - Anyone have a bass-raider?
