Steve, Kerry and I participated in the ABA tournament on Lake of Egypt this weekend. We were glad that Rob and I repaired the trolling motor to enable us to take the boat this weekend. There were 6 boaters and 5 non-boaters and Kerry was the 6th non-boater.
The day started out wet. Thunderstorms with brilliant displays of lightning blew over the lake and delayed our blast-off by about 10-15 min.
Steve and I started out fishing a cove and I managed to catch a 13 incher in the first 20 min. Nothing other than a slot fish by Steve a couple hours after that. We then pulled up on a spot and managed to catch 5 keepers in about ah hour or so (3 came within 15 min of eachother) (2 12-14 inchers each and I got a 16+). The area was getting blasted by wind and our trolling motor was dying. We decided to move to get out of the wind. After a while outta the wind, with an hour left, we decied to return to the cove (but not spot on the spot). We fished for a while and with 10 min left, I asked Steve if he wanted me to fire up the big motor and get us in position for one cast apiece to the spot. Steve agreed, I fired up the motor and postioned us for one cast. Steve fired a cast, got a bite, and uttered the words "Big fish." I netted the fish and instantly realized what had happened. In my Takahiro Omori voice I yelled "Five poundah." Steve had caught a beast. I fired up the big motor once again and positioned us for another cast. This time it was my turn. I fired a cast and got a bite and landed a good fish around 3 pounds. Steve and I were screaming with excitement as we then saw the boat (another ABA boat) that had just vacated our spot catch 2 good fish (4-5 pounds) right in a row. We then made a few more passes and decided to call it a day.
Steve weighed in 3 fish good for 7.9 pounds, big fish at 4.83.
After a 1 pound penalty and the loss of one of my fish (my 16 incher shrank 1/2 an inch making it too short!), I weighed in 3 fish for a total of 4.69 (5.69-1.00).
Kerry fished with a boater from Kentucky and managed to catch a couple of slot fish. She said that she had fun and that's what counts.
All in all, a good day on Egypt!
