So I was fishing at Kaufmann Lake today for a couple of hours and a couple amazing things happened:
1) I caught a small smallmouth bass on a crankbait, which is cool b/c I've never caught one out of there before
2) At dusk, I was fishing with a white doublewide beaver at the north side of the lake when my line felt heavy and began to move off right. I swung for the fences and barely moved a GIANT bass. After several heart-stopping minutes I landed an enormous fish (there were several witnesses) One guy, a crappie fisherman, had a measuring tape so we measured the fish (measuring tape flat on the ground like a golden rule). The behemoth prespawn bass measured just slightly over 24" in length. Unfortunately, my phone's battery has been on the fritz and I'd left it in my jeep. I could have gotten a picture of this magnificent fish, but I would have had to kill her to do so. I removed the hook quickly, gave her a kiss, and let her swim gently away.
My first guess for the fish seeing her was around 8 lbs, but I hadn't caught one that big in forever so I started looking on the internet. The length cubed over 1600 chart for bass weight showed the fish's weight at 8.64 pounds. Reading about that estimation says that a fish could weigh up to a half pound more or less based on its condition!! Since my fish was an absolute FOOTBALL, I sincerely believe this bass could well have weighed nine pounds. But whether it was 8 or 9, it's a memory I will never forget. Hopefully one of you young guys in the club will catch her in a few years after she fattens up a bit more. Have a good night, everyone!
