i chose garcia due to the fact that they have been making precision reels for a very long time and i have never had one fail on me. the new ones are as smooth as reels from other manufacturers that would cost up to 3-4 times as much. i wouldn't recommend anything else.

Shimano makes comfortable to cast and amazingly smooth low-profile baitcast reels. I'll let anyone try one to find out. Unless you are deep cranking you won't burn out the gears and the casting distance you get with Shimano reels is comparable to most other reels. Unless you decide to throw giant swimbaits in which case you shouldn't be using low-profile reels in the first place. I've recently been practicing skipping lures and I feel that I get an advantage with Shimano that most other reels can't compare to. You've got to have confidence in your reel no matter what manufacturer it comes from and for me I'm comfortable with Shimano.

I also voted Shimano. Abu's have their place in my arsenal however for most of my bass fishing I like shimano. However if I'm fishing for a toothy critter I use abu garcia, or if I'm cranking I'll use abu too.

I don't know why, but somehow most of my rods ended up with quantum reels -- thats why I voted for them. I personally like em' because they're usually a little bit cheaper and/or you can find better deals on em' than Shimanos. (Honestly though, If I had the money I'd probably rather buy all Shimanos)
I have two of the quantum KVD signature series low-profile ones and they work like a charm (basically like an accurist, but sexier.... haha). I also recently picked up a quantum classic 1420 mgc and it's smooth and has a lot of power to it, I've been using it for spinneraits. I have one Daiwa low-profile reel (a capricorn, not TD), and even though it has 9 bearings it's not nearly as smooth as the quantums with 6. I also fished an Abu 5600 AB for a few years, but I think I somehow messed it up and it's not workin.... maybe I'll bring it back to campus next time I go home and one of you guys can look at it. I liked how it fished when it was still functioning -- I'm gona probably pick up a couple C3s soon.

if you want the larger spool with the thumb bar look into the 5600 ssc3 in the baitcasting reels page. i also agree with chris about the fact that the reel doesn't allow you to make the type of cast its the angler. he may have been using some redneck talk but look at his truck........and you call ME redneck? ? tim i also have a 5600 AB that i got for my g/f. it takes some oil and grease to make it work properly again. c3's are hard to beat for the price and they are going to last you FOREVER.

Well it depends on what you're going to be doing. If you're pitching/flipping I'd reccomend a low profile reel like a shimano citica, pflueger trion, or quantum energy i think. If you're cranking or spinnerbait an Abu would be fine.
Here's what I use: Cranking - 7' medium - medium action w/4600 c4 Spinnerbait - 7' Med/med heavy - fast action w/Pflueger Trion Low profile Pitching - 7' med heavy extra fast w/Shimano Citica D Frog/flipping - 7'2 Extra heavy - extra fast w/Bass Pro round reel Topwaters(poppers/walkers) - 6'6 medium fast action w/shimano chromica
I use 12lb flourocarbon for cranking, 15lb big game for pitching/spinnerbaits/topwater, and 65lb power pro for froggin/flipping

How come you don't have a 5' 6" light action $12 walmart rod like I had at windsor last time? hahah dude it broke in my trunk just last night....
Question though, so do you use ur Pitching rod for fishing texas and c-rigs when you're out fishing deeper water? oh yeah and is ur cranking rod fiberglass?
oh yeah and what brand do you guys think makes the best rods?

yeah i pitch with like t-rigs, and jigs. and i c-rig in deeper water. My crankin rod is just a bass pro crankin stick. I think its just graphite.

For the money, you can't beat the Bass Pro Shops Extreme or Bionic Blade series. I like the Extremes. Very light, responsive. Great bang for the buck.

I agree with Sean the Bass Pro Rods are really good for the money, I have two Bionic Blades, and I love them. I have an All Star rod as well and Chris will attest to how wonderful those are, and I love my St. Croix.

Bass Pro Shops reels for me are a good blend of low price, smoothness, and durability. They've held up better than daiwa or quantum reels for me and not as good as shimano or garcia, but they're cheaper on average than any of the others for what you get and the casting distances are phenomenal. The Extreme series reels are some of the best baitcaster deals going right now. If I had unlimited budget I'd go for the real high dollar quantum (tour series), garcia (revo), or shimano (curado) reels as I've tried all and they all seem to be well-made and pretty amazing.

Gander Mountain brand rods are pretty good especially for the price. $60 will get you an IM-8 grade graphite rod in a fast action in pretty much any length/power you want. They also have a 2 year warranty so if you break 'em, all you have to do is bring it back to a GM store and they give you a new one at no charge, no quesitons asked.
I am partial to St. Croix rods for higher end rods. St Croix actually came out with a $50-$60 line of rods which are really good for that price (think about it--same technology/company that makes $500+ rods). I broke 2 St Croix rods this year and they replaced them both even though the breaks were my fault. Many rods come with at least a 5 year warranty with mine having a Lifetime warranty. Yes Lifetime. I'll have these rods when I'm 80.
As far as reels, I go with Shimano for pitchin' or similar apps and Garcia for crankin' big stuff. My Curado is probably my most favorite reel ever. Garcias are also good for throwing musky stuff. And yes, I have a couple Garcias that are approx 50 years old.

Shimano all the way. They not only come with the best warranties, but they have great promotions for thier vendors. I've gotten a Stradic, Crucial, TX and Sedona for free from that company.

Quantum baby! I hate the idea of removing the sideplate of my reel to adjust the centrifical brake each time the wind picks up - or i change lures. Additionally at the different price points Quantum reels are better - sorry i just can't afford $300+ to get a better reel.
